boring and biased September 8, 2010 c-elf (seattle) i was looking forward to reading this book. i was sorely disappointed.
first of all, the week by week descriptions of what is happening with the baby are very short, and as another reviewer noted, nothing you probably aren't already getting if you're signed up for any kind of email updates about your pregnancy. and the text is so dry and dull. also, a lot of the measurements and developmental changes do not match up time-wise to other sources (of all which concur), which leads me to wonder how old the information is that this book uses.
and it assumes the readers are white. it describes things like pink and blue veins becoming visible on the mom's body (only visible on very light skin), the baby's skin being pink (i find it hard to believe darker skinned people grow pink skinned babies), and various other things i can't remember off the top of my head that present a very biased and white-washed view. i know we're all pink on the inside, but come on - at least admit not every mom will be able to see the veins through the skin of her breasts!!
give this book a miss. i regret buying it.
Best of the best! August 23, 2010 Happy Mama This is the ONLY pregnancy book you will need. Before I got pregnant and during my pregnancy, I got at least 10 pregnancy books. The only other one that I also found helpful was "What to Expect," but this book is WAY better. Don't waste your money on other books. I regret getting all the "natural birth" and "natural" methods books, they were not scientifically proven (in fact, sometimes outright dangerous!). Go with the Mayo Clinic. You, your husband, and your baby will be glad. : )
Very helpful book August 22, 2010 Xinzhi Zhao (FAIRFAX, VA, US) My wife and I ordered this book and read it in our first trimester. It turned out to be worth the price, which is well structured with detailed and actionable information on week by week baby/mother changes, potential decisions, complexity and problems to be aware. Though the book is quite thick (600 pages),I have completed it within two weeks before I feel more confident to take good care of my wife.
Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy August 10, 2010 N. Larson (Brownsville, Wi. United States) This was given as a gift to my daughter. She said it's full of useful info, and she's following along in the book as she progresses in her pregnancy. Though not certain, I'll give it a 5 star.
Very informative August 7, 2010 Sara Arthur (Wheaton, MD, US) This is a great book. I have read both this and the usual (What to Expect) books, but this (Mayo Clinic) surpasses all the others by far. The details and explanations of what exactly is going on in your body are great. Way more helpful then just saying "it's normal" like other books. This is my new "congrats-your-pregnant" gift.
It would be great if they had Mayo Clinic Guides to your toddler, etc...
